Sport in the Army Medical Services
Sport in the Army Medical Services
Sporting competitions and games have always played a role within the Army Medical Services (AMS), due to the focus on fitness and health. Today sport continues to keep soldiers fit as well as boosting the mental wellbeing of individuals and reinforcing morale and unit identity.
In 1918 the Army Sport Control Board (ASCB) was formed, which today organises competitions in over 50 different disciplines. Popular sports from across the former Empire, such as Polo, were also brought back to the United Kingdom.
Those serving in the Army Medical Services have often been at the forefront of elite sports; for example, Victoria Cross and Bar recipient Noel Chavasse competed in the 1904 Olympic Games, while Roger Bannister (who undertook his National Service with the RAMC) competed in the 1952 Olympic games and is notable for being the first man to run a mile in under four minutes, in 1954.
In 2014 the Invictus Games was founded under the basis that sport had the ability to inspire recovery and support rehabilitation. This international multi-sport event has been held in cities across the globe with the aim to allow a platform for servicemen and women injured in conflict and for those who suffering from long-term illness to compete in competitive sports with other personnel from across the world.
