Job Vacancy: Curator
The Museum of Military Medicine is seeking an enthusiastic and well-organised curator to manage the day-to-day running of its new venture situated at Whittington Barracks, near Tamworth in Staffordshire. Reporting to the Museum Director, the postholder will play an important delivery and co-ordination role, providing briefings and general commentary to civilian and military visitors, and assisting with exhibition interpretation, temporary displays, and outreach. This hands-on role will suit someone who is well-organised and looking to develop their skills in a unique heritage environment.
The position is offered on a fixed term two-year contract in the first instance.
Key tasks and responsibilities:
1. To be responsible to the Director for the day-to-day running of the Museum of Military Medicine at Whittington Barracks.
2. To respond to enquiries to the museum in a timely fashion.
3. To provide briefings and general commentary to both civilian and military visitors, both within the museum and externally through the museum’s outreach programme. To conduct presentations to RAMS Recruits, Entry Officers Reserve and Regular.
4. To promote the collections and archives as a tool for researchers.
5. To assist with school visits by providing educational support materials.
6. To assist with the planning and preparation of exhibitions and displays.
7. To manage the museum volunteers on site.
8. Any other tasks as reasonably required.
Personal specification:
Essential
1. To be able to interact comfortably with civilian and military personnel and have some understanding of the military system.
2. Ability to self-organise and willingness to work flexibly, out of normal office hours and off-site if required.
Desirable
1. Have some experience of working in an accredited military museum environment.
2. Relevant heritage or museum qualification or interest in working towards a qualification.
Additional Work Elements
The post-holder is based at the museum’s premises at Whittington Barracks but may occasionally be required to work at other locations.
Due to the nature of the role, some flexibility is required.
Some lifting and carrying of objects and display equipment.
A full driving licence and own transport given the transport connections to the site.
A DBS Check will be required
